"I saw a "can't-be-right" price from overstock.com on a refurbished Nikon D50 body for $469.99 - 10%. Since I have months before I really need it, even with all the negative comments on this forum, I decide to give it a try.

I placed my order on 7/18, and they took a few days to process my order. Beside an initial comfirmation e-mail, they did not send any communication on order status. Then I figure that I have to find it myself by checking the order status on their web sites. I received the camera on 7/26.

It is a refurbished item, and it looks as good as a new one. I would have expect that if there weren't so many negative reviews.

Anyway, I am very pleased that I bought the camera from them.

There is a big difference between a store with a process that can be improved and a store that can not be trusted. I have no doubt that some customers had some bad experiences with overstock.com, but this reseller seems to be a reputable one.

""BAIT and SWITCH", just like someone mentioned. Ordered an Antec Power supply for a computer and received tape for some Brother labelling system. The original item as usual out-of-stock now. The funny thing is that the invoice that came with the order says that the order is for the tape but online it shows the power supply. Seems like a deliberate attempt to avoid shipping the original order.
Overstock is arranging for the return, but it is a great waste of my time. I had to put my computer on hold for a week and now I have to drive to the ups to make the return.

"These reviews can't be for the same company that:

1) Sent me a mattress the day I ordered it,via DHL and I receive it the next day, for 3 bucks shipping!
2) When one of my purchases was defective, credited my cc within two days of contacting them, without restocking fee.
3) For a small purchase of two books, one yet unpublished, sent me the available one right away. When the publisher postponed publishing the other one, refunded price and half of shipping(!) which, really, they did not owe me.
4) And pretty much delivered on everything else.

I am thinking they either had some issues that were resolved (all my purchases are this year) or only dissatisfied customers wrote reviews. If anything, this is the best customer service I get online and I've been spoiled plenty :-) by the likes of Newegg, Amazon and the best of the lot -- Visual Apex. Considering that my VA purchases were for very-large-ticket electronics where you should expect better service, I am all the more impressed by the service from this discounter.

"Ordered Xbox 360 Platinum Package ($399).

Was shipped Xbox 360 Core Package ($299).

Credit card was charged for higher priced package. Was never contacted!

CSR states Platinum went out of stock and cannot process order or backorder on Platinum. Can only refund Core system.

"This is a highly unethical company. Take screen prints of the description of the products you are purchasing before ordering from them!
I purchased a $1000 refurbished TV from Overstock (a good deal so they sold out within 24 hours). At the time of the purchase the description clearly stated that the TV had a one year warranty. When I received the TV a few days later, the box showed a 90 day warranty. I went to check on-line and it still stated one year. I called customer service and, while on hold, they updated the site to show 90 days (likely they had similar complaints from other customers and they decided that they did not care about their customers). Their customer service people came very close to calling me a liar and refused to do anything unless I provided them evidence their web site showed one year warranty before. I asked about returning the TV and they told me I would be charged a 15% restocking fee. Even after a friend who purchased the exact same TV on the same date provided me the screen prints to prove the one year warranty promise, they are still transferring me from one manager to another and I may still not be able to get the one year warranty. What is going to happen with all the people who didn't think to screen print the exact description of the TV and are now forced to accept a shorter warranty or face a $150 restocking fee?

"Terrible Service! When I tried to track my order that was late, it said "item return pending." I never even received my item yet it appeared it was going right back to where it came from. Strange! And when I tried to ask customer service, they tried to convince me the order was within the estimated time of arrival rather than addressing the issue of the item pending a return. DO NOT SHOP HERE."

"Placing my order was very difficult. When entering my credit card info, the same page reloaded saying there was an error and I should look below for more information. There was no additional information anywhere on the page. I tried several times, clearing my cookies, closing and re-opening my browser, and nothing worked. So I called them and was told that I should clear my cookies. I tried that again, but still got the same error. They put me on hold to check with a supervisor, who didn't have any other suggestions.
So, I had to place my order over the phone since their site does not work and they don't know how to fix it. Luckily the person I spoke with completed the order process very quickly and was very nice.

"As a fairly well educated consumer (engineer with law degree) I have found Overstock to be a excellent online store. We have ordered every thing from bedding to exercise equipment and have never been dissatisfied. When we needed customer service they were there. The packing and shipping was excellent. The invoice above covers a recumbent exercise machine and a Chi Exerciser. Both items are used daily and were exactly as advertised. I give this store a 10."

"I placed 3 orders and did the online chat to ensure there was inventory and every order was cancelled due to "inventory issues". What is wrong with a company that can't tell if they have the 49 on-hand or not that the cust service rep says they have? Reminds me of the early days of the web in 1995. I won't be back to these guys since they don't have a clue what they are doing."

"I've ordered a HP Laserjet printer, but when received and found it is refurnished item, Overstock misleaded me to think it was "brand New" item, the condition was totally unacceptable, and the price is same as "brand New". If I would buy "refurnished" model, I can find even cheaper price. When I returned the item, I am charged $39 for restocking, it is crazy ! "

"I was firstly rather satisfied with Overstock.
The orders went through timely and received them in an acceptable time period. But the quality of the products they deliver is just way under the expected level of quality.

I bought a Dolce & Gabanna watch and a golden bellybutton piercing, both not for very cheap and after several weeks (2 to 4 weeks) they both started to become defective. The piercing lost its stones and the dial of the watch started getting loose, restricting the pointers to move.

They were not willing to return the piercing as they stated that there was no return policy for that. The product was almost $70 dollars and if you pay that kind of money, you expect a decent product, not the case with overstock.

They were willing to repair the watch, but then I had to pay 9 dollars handling fee excluding the costs incurred to send the product to an outsourced unofficial dealer.

After this and some other issues with products that got worked out eventually, I am sick of overstock and its faulty practices and I will never use their services again.

"I spent three weeks trying to convince Overstock my order never shipped, the Federal Express tracking number never showed the order scanned in by Overstock. Overstock finally reshipped my order, despite my asking for a refund due to their failure to ship within the 1-4 business days they said they would ship within.

The order arrived in a slapped together shipping box, the product didn't have the same dimensions specified on the product page and was an overpriced piece of junk.

Their "list" prices are fantasy prices, there isn't any chance some of their merchandise has every in the history of mankind sold for even 1/2 what the list price shows.

Customer service is worthless, they don't respond to emails, they make excuses such as the tracking info just hasn't updated (for three weeks??????).

I've had no choice but to initiate a credit card chargeback.

"My first order was 2.5 years ago when I tried to order a magazine subscription. After several months and not receiving a single issue I inquired about it and was told they may have "run out of stock" and they refunded my credit card.
This time around (this week), I ordered a PSP. Although their help page says that you can use both a gift card and coupon for an order, the system wouldn't let me. So I called them and after some manager intervention my order was placed using both the coupon and gift card. The person I spoke with was very friendly and courteous. I was told to expect delivery in 5 to 10 business days.
The next day I read all the horrer stories here and got worried. I had been given a tracking number the day after ordering but usps.com had no record of it. I was also concerned about the page that said the PSP would be shipped Media Mail (and the PSP is clearly not media).
Two days after ordering the PSP was showing "out of stock" on the site and the next day it was gone completely. I was certain my PSP hadn't been shipped and wondered if I would ever get it.
Then today, the fourth day since ordering, it arrived at my door!
So, despite my worrying, the only problem with my order was the coupon/gift card issue. From this experience I would buy from them again, though due to all these reports I will still weigh the risks.

"I ordered a game console on 6/3/2006 and was told when i called that they had 118 in stock but would not ship until 6/10/2006 i told him to cancel my order..He said he could not do that..I was shocked so i guess my only recorse is to call my credit card co..STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS SHADY COMPANY..BUYER BEWARE!!!!"
