They subcontract their repair techs. After setting up an appointment through Smooth I never heard from the tech. I called Smooth again five days after setting up the first appointment to schedule another one. A day later the tech called and said he couldn't come out until the following day. In the end, it took a week for a tech to show up.
All was for naught. I received two replacement motors for my treadmill and neither worked. Frustrated and angry after two weeks of no treadmill, I ordered a new one from NordicTrack. I'm still waiting to hear back from Smooth about receiving a refund for the defective motors. So far I'm out over $500 with nothing to show for it.
I should note that the treadmill worked great for four years of hard everyday use. But once it broke and I had to deal with customer service that's when you discover the company's liabilities. They also list a fake customer service number on their website. You have to call the 800 number to get through to them. It's not a big deal, but it's also not a big deal for them to correct. And the customer service email address is also wrong. Those are simple things that they should fix. The fact that they don't adds to their poor image.
UPDATE: Customer service did respond (after posting this review) and they will refund me some money. However, their email in response to this review contains a blatant fabrication. They claimed the belt and deck were wasted (their word), which is NOT true. There is nothing wrong with either of them. It's weird that they would just make that up, because it's unnecessary.
Bottom line, the products they make are good but their customer service sucks."

My only comment would be that the poor man who delivered it, would have had a very hard time, if we had not been here to help, getting it in the entry that we paid $99 extra for. I would suggest that another person on that trip would have been advisable."

"On the day of delivery they were unable to provide an answer to a very simple question: Can a plastic cover that was damaged on delivery on the front of the treadmill be replaced, or will they have to send a new unit?
The delivery men waited while I attempted to contact Smooth Fitness and determine if they could deliver the unit, or I would need to refuse delivery and send it back. Smooth Fitness transferred me to four different people after I started with the salesman who sold me the treadmill. During the 22 minutes phone call, while the delivery men were also waiting on an answer, I ended up speaking with somebody in sales, service, and two different people in parts while getting transferred between Smooth Fitness and Treadmill Doctor. No information was retained between transfers so I was forced to repeat the everything to each person. The last woman transferred me to a voice mail box with no answer to the question and no explanation, forcing me to refuse delivery of the entire unit as I could not be assured that they would replace the damaged piece.
After the delivery company left with the treadmill I called again, because now my question was: When will my new treadmill actually be delivered after today's failed attempt? I ended up leaving a message for somebody in logistics. Currently I am waiting on a return call and have no indication of when I will receive my treadmill.

Received return phone calls informing me that a new unit would be shipped out either today or tomorrow. Also received an email with a new reference number for the reorder, and was informed that I would hear from the shipping company to schedule delivery next week. So in less than 2 business days, they were able to ship out a new unit. Pending delivery and setup, I will edit again and adjust the score accordingly."

"We purchased a Smooth Fitness 9.45ST Treadmill in 2009 and had four years of regular/trouble-free use. The deck recently developed a warp, but after contacting Smooth, a replacement deck was quickly shipped out with instructions on the repair. Have been very pleased with this treadmill and am even more so now, thanks to the great service/support."
"I purchased my elliptical/bike in June 2013, and thought that from viewing the online advertising video that it had athletic training
intensity, but it does NOT. After five months of use, and seemingly
very light physical intensity levels, I decided to have a technician come
out and check the bike since operating it on level eight appeared to have
the same intensity as level one. After the machine was checked by your
technician and speaking with one of your representatives (Bulent), it
was agreed that this bike was NOT built for athletic training. I have
been waiting for at least two weeks for a manager to contact me about
exchanging the bike under the warranty, but as of today (12/10/13),
after leaving a message, I have not received a response from one of
your managers. After spending more than $1200 on this bike, I am
presently very dissatisfied with the assistance from Smooth Fitness.

"The treadmill was delayed significantly. After it finally arrived, two gentlemen came to complete the installation. Prior to purchase, we confirmed that the free delivery offer included installation in a second floor bedroom. They grumbled extensively about having to carry the unit upstairs. They even suggested that I locate another location on the main floor, which is not possible. Once they finally got it upstairs, they proceeded to complete the installation. Because I was working upstairs, I could overhear most of their conversation. They grumbled about the assembly, periodically saying they didn't know where pieces fit. They said repeatedly "we will never do this again". They criticized the overall design. When they were finished, they came to tell me that they were done. Overall, they were not friendly and completely unprofessional. The treadmill seems to be pretty substantial, but several weeks ago, I discovered that a screw was missing from the housing. I am now concerned that it may not have been installed correctly. The unit made a tremendous clicking noise, so I tightened all of the remaining bolts with the wrench provided. Overall, we like the treadmill however, the installation was such a fiasco that I don't have confidence in the long term for durability."
