"I purchased an allegedly refurbished Dell GX100 system from surpluscomputers.com. It was DOA - the cpu fan was bouncing around inside the case and the unit would not boot. I reported this to customer service. I got an RMA and returned the unit. I ended up paying for shipping the unit both ways even though the computer was clearly deffective and the damage happened before shipping or while it was intransit to me. I would recommend that nobody purchase anything from surpluscomputers.com until this policy is fixed. I have made several purchases from surpluscomputers.com, but I won't anymore."

"This is about a walk in purchase I recently purchased a motherboard combo Jetway 861cs & 650 Duron for my 11 year old son .I got home and and began building it every piece is new 30gig HD, 384 mb of ram lite-on cd-rom from surplus comp. a Cd-Rw (BTC 52x48x52) new from frys the case & power suply is also ,. from Surplus comp.The O/S Windows XP pro While Building it I noticed that the CPU had thermal compound on it and the fan & heatsink were all scrathed up obvisilly these components were used so just to get the story straight i E-miled them asking if i orderd this combo l would be recieving all new components 2 days later they replyed asuring me that all components will be new well the next day the system began freezen up and the blue screen of death started to apear after checking everything i barrowed a 950 duron and installed that everything was working fine antil that night the power suply wasn't sending any power to the cd-roms the next day i took the whole system down to them they accused me of swithing the 650cpu and heatsink because they wouldn't of gave my used murchandise and since it had been 22 days sinse i had purchased the case & power supply it must had been me who dammaged the power supply after arguing with them for 30 min. or so the threaten to call the police if i didn't leave So i decided to contact the family attorney about this well looks like I will be filling a lawsuit against them for a number of things I will post again when more info "

"JetWay barebones with Duron 600 has been having problems from the start. No operating system can be installed. It has not been productive even 1 cent's worth. Troublehooted spending scores of hours, and buying otherwise not needed drives and memory and testing with several different CD ROMS. While technical service was very prompt when approached for the first time - it sent canned reply copying verbatim from internet messages about what might be causing such problems, which I had already seen before and considered in my own troubleshooting. Possible causes might be OK. But what is the exact cause in this case and what is the solution? When asked that question, again the technical department was very prompt and asked to send back the mother board and the CPU for adjustment and/or replacement. However, RMA department wants to complete some complicated forms not appropraite for parts recalled by its own technical department and is moving very slowly. Person in the RMA department is not exactly doing this on her own - but seems to be constrained by management policy.

Apparently management is pushing merchantise known to be defective and unusable and too costly to return for refund or warranty service - and has added to that inappropriate bureucratic procedures.

I have already spent more than the cost of barebones in buying additional drives and memory, when I already had the needed memory and drives for this barebones.

After seeing someoe else's message and my own experiece on how it is moving when parts are recalled by its own technical department, I am wondering whether it would be worth while to pursue this matter with the party any further.

I've been ordered through direct mail sales since 5mhz XT days, and I have never had as bad experience as I did with Surplus Computers. I ordered on August 21, and it took them *over 9 weeks* to get all the parts together for me to assemble a "barebones." Many of the main components were apparently used, though the system was billed as new.

Details:
Ordered a barebones computer that showed up within a week. Everything looked good, until the ECS mobo would not install XP correctly. I called tech support, they said to send it in. It took roughly a week, and when I called to check they were sending the same one back but had not checked for the specific problem.

I asked if I could just swap it out, and Nancy in the RMA department offered a comparable mobo (Jetway). I get the ECS mobo back with the CPU attached (as I had sent it) an immediately send it back as I received it. I email them twice over a period of a week and a half to let them know I included the CPU, but never receive a response. Another week goes by, and I had to call to get them to ship out the jetway mobo.

Of course, they did not include the CPU on it. I call and they say they'll ship it out "expediated." When I finally receive it over a week later, it was only shipped UPS Ground.

And it does not include the fan. I call again, setting everything aside for the hopeful day when I can assemble it (now having defeated the entire purpose of a barebones system).

I receive the fan, this time truly expediated, and sit down to assemble everything. The CPU is not only used with thermal grease on it, but it also has bent pins. The mobo CPU locking lever is broken in half on the mobo, and the mobo is not comparable at all the ECS as it does not support the same memory. I tried to call twice, and they never returned my calls.

Needless to say, I disputed this with my credit card.

Seems like Surplus Computers would be a great place to buy from if you never have to return anything. Judging by my experience, I bet you will.

11-14-2003: Surplus Computers responded below with, "We do apologize for the service you recieved." Apparently not enough to have returned phone calls or emails. These are no matter, since it makes disputing the charge with the credit card company that much easier. Nevertheless, I am still out $45 on shipping charges (they don't refund shipping charges - ever!)

With regards to the BBB complaints, I checked the BBB records of several other highly rated companies here (including newegg), and there are no registered complaints, and yet Surplus Computers has 35? Interesting.

I go to the site every day looking for new items. I picked up PCI USB2.0/Fire Wire 5USB/3Firewire on the card for 19.99.

I have only once received a vid card that was DOA and they went out of the way to replace it.

"I purchased an item on 10/07/03 in the early AM. I selected 2 day shipping and would get the item on 10/09/03. I sent the company an email immediately after placing my order requesting stocking confirmation and shipping timing. I was told by Ray Chau that there was stock of the item and it would be shipped that day. On 10/09/03, the item never arrived, but an email tracking notification did from FedEx stating the item was shipped 10/09/03 and was sent Express Overnight. My original issue was to be notified of the shipping timing, due to extreme customer concern from my client that the item arrive and be installed ON TIME. Since the package is now late, and I am left with an extremely upset client, so I turn to Ray Chau for an answer. Basically, I told him that I would leave feedback on sites such as this about my experience, and without any care, he stated I should do as I see fit and never got any form of an apology or retribution. I will never ever buy from this company nor would I ever dare mention this site as being worthy of any business from me or my clients. BUYERS BEWARE"

"I placed an order for some misc. products. The round
cables were a great value. It took 2 weeks to get the
products though. The used monitor I ordered came in
with a color loss problem in the bottom right corner
and the phone I ordered doesn't work. It would cost
me about $25.00 to ship the monitor back, which will
bring it to the monitor costing me about $100.00 ( I
can get new monitors for $90.00), so it would not be
smart to waste more money in shipping it back. The phone
came with a dead battery and it will cost me $15.00 to
replace it.
I do not recommend buying used from this company, but
the cables and some new parts are worth the money if
you can wait for them.

"Their return policy is horrible. A Client of mine bought a Netgear router that came DOA and they would not replace it but sent her to the manufacture, who had just as bat of a return policy and I will be reviewing them next. If you don’t like throwing your money away when you get a DOA, don’t shop from here. I can’t believe they have such a high rating. "
