"In the old days we bought secondary market tickets from guys outside of stadiums. Then it moved to Craigslist. But both of these had problems - the selection was narrow and the counter party untrustworthy. I know a lot of people who paid a lot for counterfeit tickets (including my niece and friends who spent a bucket load on fake Coachella wristbands.) Along came Stubhub, Vivid, etc. and they solved those problems by ensuring the legitimacy of tickets - insured by money back guarantees - and they grabbed enough market share to a: give you a choice of tickets, and b: let a real market develop around pricing between buyers and sellers. But they introduced two problems of their own. The first is transparency. If you go to Vivid seats you see the seller's price, but you need to go DEEEEP into check to see your real cost with added fees. From what I understand, Stubhub took a shot at "all in pricing" but they got mashed by Vivid and others who were playing "hide the ball." Stubhub prices LOOKED pricier to the casual, uninformed consumer, so they went back to fake pricing (but to give them credit, you can pretty easily switch to seeing the full price. The second problem is that their fees are out of line. For a near zero cost transaction, a 30% or whatever fee it just out of line. Maybe this is ok on a $100 ticket to a basketball game, since its just thirty bucks. But for Super Bowl tix, where prices range from $3k - >$10k this is insane. Why should the broker take $3 grand on a simple electronic transaction.
The good news is that TickPick is both transparent and has more reasonable fees. Their inventory may not be quite as large, but it is big enough to provide lots of options and generate true market outcomes. If TickPick says a Super Bowl ticket is $2955, the ticket is $2,955. Actually, that isn't true. they do have one hidden fee - a $5 ticket delivery fee. I thought this a bit tacky, but on the upside they had a nice space to hang out and were pouring strong drinks so I've decided to not hold a grudge. Oh, and that same ticket would have ended up at more like $3,200 with "the big boys."
Long term, I have to believe that the market will flatten out and fees will be capped, or subjected to a Lehman curve. It is hard to justify paying more than $100 for the transaction, and I think we will get there. But as it is, TickPick is the best option available today. Transparent pricing. Reasonable (in relative terms) fees. Great communications. Nice people. I seldom write reviews but I'm all in on Tick Pick and have already recommened them to some friends. Tick Pick will be my first top whenever I'm looking at buying seats. In fact, a couple of days ago I bought tickets to see Jerry Seinfeld at the Beacon Theater in NY. Sadly, the best available seats were not on TickPick so I (grumblingly) used a competitor. Still, hard to complain - got front row seats, and Paul McCartney was 3 seats over.
Money can't buy you love. But I still love Tick Pick.
