Drop shipping from manufacturer or distributor without any knowledge of stock availability
"They drop ship from the manufacturer or some other distributor. Site says a product is in-stock and they give an impressive date by which it will be delivered, for free! But they don't have the stock. They don't have any apparent way of monitoring the status of the stock. When a week goes by and the shipping date has been pushed out twice they continue to say that all is well and you will get the item soon, and this time you can trust them, sorry about the inconvenience from before. But "sorry" is meaningless if you aren't changing your behavior to prevent it from happening again. I believed them twice, waiting week after week with no sign that it will ever be shipped. Finally canceled my order, and even that was a headache with stupid questions like "what is the company name" when if they even glanced at the order details they could see that no company name was on the order, so it's just a waste of time to ask that.
No doubt the customer service agents hate their job. They are definitely fielding a lot of these issues right now. Yes, Covid-19 **** and has messed things up. But the core issue here predates Covid-19 presumably by years: They list things as in-stock which are not, and either they don't know the actual status or they continually lie about it. Neither is good. Neither is the product of Covid-19.
If it's not in stock it should say that very clearly before the order is placed. Do not give a date 3 days in the future when the customer is told it will be delivered if there isn't even anything available to ship. This is basic and obvious, yet it continues to escape them. As a result you can't trust anything on the site or info from their customer service agents. I will never again buy anything from Quill."
"First, the bad news: You can't actually try on the glasses first, and it takes weeks to get your glasses after payment. Personally I find those WELL worth the tradeoff, because I got a very good-looking pair of optically perfect, solid-feeling, well-made glasses for under $50, including shipping. I got these as my morning & night backups to contacts, not sure how much I would like them, so I didn't get many lens upgrades. Now that I know how good they are I will be ordering another pair with a higher refraction index (probably Trivex) and all the coatings. Even with all the upgrades they will still be far cheaper than glasses WITHOUT upgrades from every Luxottica-owned or -supplied store! Such an excellent deal. I could not be happier with Zenni.
The glasses preview system is very effective. I went back and compared what I look like with the glasses on to the preview on their site with the photo I uploaded and it is a remarkably good (but inherently imperfect) representation.
Again, shipping takes a while. They are produced in China and then shipped in large groups to California before shipping individually to you. That efficient process is how they get the prices so low. And it's not like ordering something off the shelf. Each pair has to be made (lenses produced for your selected frames, to your prescription and pupillary distance, then assembled into the pre-fabricated frames) specifically for you. It is worth the wait!"
