It's totally a scam

"I received a cold call from a sales rep with Home Advisor telling me that they were receiving many requests a day in my area for a computer repair service and they needed to have somebody to refer the requests to. She said I'd be getting leads the same day possibly the next day depending on when the account finished being set up. I said I'd be happy to sign up as long as they guaranteed I'd be receiving leads and if I did not that I'd receive a full refund. She promised that was the case and so I paid $279.99 and set up an account. I received no leads the first week, but I did get a call asking how things were going, I told the rep they were not going well and he promised me again that if I was still unhappy in another week that we could cancel and refund the $287.99. After another week went by I called to close my account and get my refund where I was told that I could not have a refund. I was told that nobody would issue me a refund that there were no supervisors or superiors who would help me.

I called my credit card company to dispute the charge and they called Home Advisor to try to get a refund and were told the same thing. So I proceeded with the charge dispute where Home Adviser is given an opportunity to refute my claim or refund the money.

Then I came here to the BBB to file a complaint and was given two email addresses to try contacting Home Advisor to quietly resolve the issue. This worked and John Williard refunded the $287.99. Why this couldn't have been resolved over the phone initially I don't know.

A week later i received a nasty email from Home Advisor stating that "numerous inquiries regarding your outstanding balance" had been attempted and that they were now sending me to collection for $307.99. Where the additional $20 came from they won't tell me. I can say that nowhere in the last week was I called or emailed by Home Advisor attempting to resolve this "outstanding balance".

I emailed Mr Williard asking him why they sent this nasty message and he says it's because my credit card company refunded the money to me and I could either close the dispute or allow Home Advisor to rebill me for one of the charges. This seemed shady so I called Capital One and they told me that Home Adviser is not allowed to rebill me. They must complete the dispute. It seems to me that this company does everything in their power to first keep your money and then if you file any sort of complaint against them they will find any way possible to hush it so they don't look bad. I'm tired of big companies pushing people around so I'm filing a complaint in hopes that the BBB will do something.

Waste of money!

"We signed up with Home Advisors a few months ago. Most of the leads we were given were junk. I would call them in a matter of minutes and you can't get through to the customer and they don't call back after multiple messages. We were told we could get credits for leads we can't get in contact with but that was a lie. Each person you talk to from this company gives you a different story. Of course all the junk leads are for installs which cost more. I also would get direct leads (meaning they only give the home owner our info no other contractor) and you still can't get in touch with the customer and those cost even more money. We did get a few jobs from this but 98% of them are junk. When I called to cancel I was given Rocky to talk to and he is the most condescending **** I have ever talked to. We get an email this morning saying they are sorry we want to cancel and to click here for 5 free leads. It still doesn't look like they have canceled us. DO NOT trust this company. All they want is to take your money! "

Scam leads

"As a HomeAdvisor vendor The vast majority of leads are junk. I think they send out fake leads so they can charge you for them. We call our leads in 5 minutes or less, but can not connect with most of them, they don't answer or return messages. Home Adviser claims they will credit back bad leads but they don't, Home Adviser will give you your first couple credits and then after that they refused to give anymore. Of course they claim that we are the only one having that experience but as we talk to other service providers, everyone has that same experience. We are able to pick up a few paying jobs but as a whole we lose money with Home Adviser. "

Like so many have said - Don't do it!

"I signed up when promised leads for kitchen remodeling. All I got was phone numbers and names - Not qualified leads. I immediately requested credits for the "leads" and then within 3 days of signing up, cancelled my contract. They agreed to credit the signup charges but wouldn't credit one of the leads, so I contacted my credit card company who was familiar with this company. The charges were reversed, but Home Advisor has sent the amount to a collection agency. No bid deal as I actually have an 841 credit score.

Wish I had looked up their reviews prior to signing up. Beware!

A total scam don't do it you will losse money!!!

"I sign up I received 16 leads from $25 to $37 each . I only got phone numbers and body ever answer the phone and they still want to charge for them . Even the customer already got somebody else on thumbtack or porch and homeadvisor still charge for them. When you call it a battle they play stupid or try to confuse you by not giving straight answer about billing

Every lead is a constant battle to get the credit them they say the credit will be given and they still run the leads like they are actual charges . A total scam they feed out people not complaining you willl loose lots of money if you sign up

Hung up on me

"I was trying to leave a good reference for the pro who helped me but it listed the wrong pro in my "project tab". I call homeadvisor as it says to do if the correct professional isn't listed. I explained my issue multiple times to a person who sounded like they'd smoked for a century and when she couldn't figure out the issue she says "to hell with it" and she hangs up. I call back get another person, they forward me to their "help desk" I have to leave a message then never hear back. Total crappy experience. "

I'm a successful small business using Home Advisor

"The entire business model of Home Advisor is to benefit Home Advisor only. I have done pretty well on the site, but that doesn't change the fact that they are way too expensive for leads, and the leads are 95% ****. If you are a pro on Home Advisor, I suggest the zip codes you choose to work in are only the rich parts of town, and when you reach your credit max (for 45 day periods) pause your leads until you are eligible to get credits again. That's what I do, and I make a decent profit, and little to none of my money is thrown away. Good contractors should not be taken advantage of. I'd suggest using Thumbtack, they have the best online source for customers and contractors alike, and they actually care about you over making money."

Three Contractors - Three Problems

"Contactor 1 - Rep came and assessed the job. He undercut his company (boss) and gave us a quote for him to do the job on the side. He came and did the job but work was very shoddy looked lousy and I had to go back afterwards and fix his screwups.
Contractor 2 - Removed popcorn ceiling and house was a mess afterward. Replaced with skip trowel ceiling. Painting of ceiling was oversprayed on walls and not touched up until I complained. Took many phone calls to have painting fixed. Now ceiling is cracked. Waited a week for the contractor to come out and fix it but on the day he was supposed to show up, I waited all morning and he never showed, Called him and he said his machine broke down and he was having it repaired so would not be here. He never called me to tell me about his delay.
Contractor 3 - Had metal roof installed. Nightmare! Missing many screws. Some edges and trim looked crappy. Contractor tried to adjust the metal on some edges but still looks very bad. Roof leaked during first rainstorm after completion. Contractor came and fixed. Now after another rainstorm, roof leaks in 2 places. Waited until late afternoon until they came and fixed the leaks which were due to the fact that they did not caulk (seal) the edges of the bathroom vents on the roof in the first place.

I think I will stick to word of mouth contractors in the future.

Terrible with their Pro's

"After finally giving in to a very insistent sales man, we started working with them but we realized very quickly that their "service" was not going to work for us due to their very high prices per leads and our inability to be able to choose the leads we wanted to work with. Basically they send you a lead and charge you for that, even if you don't even want to take it. Several times they sent us leads for work we didn't even do and when we called to request for credit for that lead it was always a hassle. Called their sales guy who initially contacted us to see if hebcould help but of course he never picked up even after telling us "he was gonna work with us" and that "he was not b.s.ing".
Called customer services to cancel our membership (March '17) and today (June 2nd '17) I get an email, a text and a call for a lead. Called to ask them what was the deal and they said our membership was only placed on hold till June 2nd. Asked them to please make sure to cancel the account and to reverse the $25 charge for the one lead I had just received. They cancelled the acct and passed me to a lady who very rudely said that thr charge was legit and that she was not going to reverse the charge because their notes said we had aggred to leave the account on hold. I kept explaining that was not the case and she just said "sir, at this point I will note the acct saying you refused the help. Have a great day!"
FYI: Leads in Thumbtack are between $3 and $15 and you choose what leads to pay for. At Home Advisor they are between $15 and $35 and they charge you for anything they send you plus a yearly membership fee of about $300 a year.
USE THUMBTACK!!
