I don't know why they are closing. I hope Kevin simply decided it was time to retire, and that there were any economic reasons that forced him out of business.
I was thinking about building a computer (would have been my first time) when I came across a response in a Usenet group from Kevin Chalker, the owner and the "KC" in the company's name.
I checked his site and then emailed him telling him I might be considering his company to buy the components.
He answered very quickly.
Then I saw on the site that KC would build the computer for the cost of the components -- no extra cost for labor and testing.
So Kevin and I communicated via email several more times after that. He came up with some great money-saving ideas, like using AMD (64-bit) instead of Intel, and going for a video card with less memory, because he said most games don't need more memory than the vid card he was recommending.
He also suggested that the built-in sound card on the motherboard might be good enough, rather than buying a separate sound card. So, for several steps, he found a way for me to pay him LESS money instead of more.
The price was great and the package arrived well-packed with no damage.
A SATA drive cable did come completely detached from the drive and the motherboard on the trip over. I re-connected it easily and it was good to go.
Similarly a cable to the temperature readout at the front of the case also came detached. I have not yet tried to reattach it, but if there's any problem, I certainly will report that here.
Once I fired up the computer, I was having trouble setting up a wireless network adapter (this was one I already owned). I emailed Kevin (on a Friday night!) asking if he had any ideas.
But I managed to figure out the problem (it was with my router and not with my new KC computer) and I emailed Kevin a second time to let him know it was OK. He emailed me back; this would have been maybe within 45 mins of my original email. That's what I consider service.
I sent him a separate email about the SATA cable and the temp readout that same night, and again his response was fast.
Based on his response to the several emails I sent him from the first time I saw his Usenet post, until I finally decided what I was going to buy, and until those emails the night I hooked up the computer, his response has always been quick.
So I have no doubt that should something go wrong with this machine, he'll be ready to stand behind his product.

"I must say that this was one of the nicest purchase experiences that I have had on the web. I was in the market for a new computer to replace my old PIII. I went to all the on-line web places and did my research. (Reseller Ratings is a good place to start if you are thinking about getting a new rig.) As it turns out, I just happen to stumble onto KC Computers via the Reseller Ratings web site. KC really didn't have what I was looking for on their web site. But, on a hunch I sent an e-mail inquiring about a certain case. (Lian-Li PC-V1000) Within a 1/2 hour, Kevin (the owner) sent me e-mail saying that he could get pretty much anything that I was looking for.
So over the next few weeks, Kevin gave me a couple of quotes. He helped define what I would need for a new system, and was very helpful in picking out the parts that I wanted. He didn't try to oversell me anything, and he tried to find the best parts for the type of computer that I was trying to build. I did priced the same computer on a few other sites, and while a little cheaper, the service and support that Kevin was giving me during this process made it worth it. And besides, I didn't really want to build my own system from a bunch of random parts that I had no idea if they would work together or not. I would rather have someone that knows what they are doing, rather than me trying to build a system from scratch. KC took care of making sure everything worked together and he even burned the system in to make sure it was up and running smoothly.
One example of great service was that I wanted a certain Lina-Li case part that was not very standard. Neither KC nor his distributors had this Lian-LI fan controller item. I showed him on-line the place that I saw the part, and he offered to order and install it for me as he built my system. Wow! So Kevin basically ordered this part from another web site, and installed into the system that he was building for me. All I can say is, this is an example of good service!
At one point he found that the case parts that we had put together didn't quite fit. He e-mailed me what was wrong, and offered to have one of his employees take the parts home and drill the needed holes to make them fit. Now, looking at them, I can't tell which ones he drilled, and which ones he didn't. This was a nice little touch.
To top all of this off, I was in a little bit of a bind. During this process, I had to go into surgery for a broken leg that I got playing soccer. *(Yeah, poor me...) Anyway, Kevin really helped out in getting the system to me, while working around my schedule with my surgery and all. This was a big blessing, for I didn't want to worry about my new system while dealing with my broken leg.
I know that most of the resellers that have 9.5 and above sometimes have a bad day or two. They might have a few unhappy customers, and someone always has at least one bad experience. Well, l tried, and I tried to find anyone who had a bad experience with KC, and I couldn't. If you read all these reviews, you will be hard press to find anything bad about the services that KC has to offer.
Have I gone on to long with this review? Perhaps. I just want you to know that buying a new systems from KC was a real pleasure. If you are about to purchase a new system, just drop him an e-mail and see what they can do. Even if you don't buy from them, dealing with them will be a nice experience.
