"When I first saw the high rating, I was skeptical because I didn't see any other company rated that highly; it looked a little too good to be true. Now, after ordering from them, I am not so surprised at the rating.

I looked around at all of the major brands like Dell, HP, Toshiba, etc; went to all the major stores, and searched for web site retailers. I always found bad points about them. Either they had notoriously horrible tech support (Dell for example), or unnacceptably long lead times, really high prices, etc. Often the technology in the notebooks they sell is just too outdated for what I'm looking for. Of course, you probably know this already if you are considering buying a custom built machine.

I saved money several different ways by buying from these guys. I can personally vouch for very good quality (more about that later) on the model I bought at a very low price. Their warrantees are very inexpensive. They saved me CA sales tax by shipping from their company in NV even though the machine was built in CA. Also, they have the 'secured payment' method if you wish. They use the approved amount on a credit card to verify that there are funds for the order and go ahead and start assembling your machine, then you send a cashiers check. When they get the check they cancel the pending CC purchase. This gets your machine built sooner while simultaneously saving you credit card charges. One little tip here is don't use a debit card from the same account you're going to pay the cash with unless you have a high enough balance for both the pending purchase and the cashier's check. Being the dummy that I am sometimes, I did just that without thinking. Things worked out fine anyway and I got the machine very quickly.

The email response was quick and attentive.

Now here is my impression of the notebook I bought. I bought the Twinhead N15RB, the 'semi-ruggedized' 15 in. notebook with the Centrium. I have had a few days to use it now.

I am extremely pleased with this notebook in every respect so far.

I think my new notebook, the 'semi-ruggedized' Twinbridge, will survive carrying around and traveling a lot better than my flimsy plastic Thinkpad did.

Performance wise the notebook so far seems extremely fast. I had the 2.0 Centrium put in and 1 GB of RAM, but I think the Radeon 9700 is also a very big plus for performance. I'm not usually heavily into games these days, but I know that new games can be a good test of some kinds of performance and I had read that a lot of people were having trouble getting Far Cry to work except on the highest end desktops. So I decided to give it a try and bought it right after receiving the notebook. From what I had seen in the gaming forum, I was hoping that it might run at Low or Medium settings, but wasn't sure it would run at all because Ubisoft says 'mobile versions of video cards not supported'.

I did no tweaking except for installing the Omega ATI video drivers from the net, and installed Far Cry. I put Far Cry's settings all to Very High and left anti-aliasing to none. The game ran perfectly and looks incredible. To me, this notebook is screamingly fast. I am looking forward to trying some video encoding to see what the CPU can do for that type of app.

One little detail I noticed is that, in addition to the ports in the online description, there is a SPDIF digital audio jack on the front.

I had wondered about the keyboard placement and feel since I couldn't try it out before buying. I am very pleased with the keyboard. It has good feedback on the strokes. Numlock can be turned on so that some of the keys become a number pad when needed.

Everything else I have used on the notebook so far workes just fine. The built in wireless antenna seems to work well. The battery life with the Centrium is definitely good, as expected. This means I never have to carry an AC adapter with me, or suddently try to find a place to work with an outlet, which had happened to me before with my other notebook.

There were no dead pixels on the display, which is an SXGA display of equally good quality to the one I had in my Thinkpad.

So to wrap things up, I have no complaints and many things to be excited about with my new notebook purchase. Everything about the experience was better than I expected. I highly recommend DiscountLaptops.com and will without hesitation tell my friends and co-workers to consider them when buying a new notebook.

"I have yet to even receive the computer - shipment is tied up due to weather. However, when I inquired as how long it was going to be and if I could upgrade shipping, just so I could take it on vacation, they automatically upgraded me free.
I don't recall ever having service of this quality! Not only that response to my emails are immediate, within 1/2 hour. I'm just thrilled.

Status August 29, received tracking number and got a note saying the box will ship on Wednesday. Just in time! We are out of town for 2 weeks early Sept and Discountlaptops was quite happy to hold the shipment if necessary, but it's not! So far, very satisfied.

Addendum December 8.
Excellent customer service just doesn't cover this company! I ordered a Chembook CL56. Wouldn't you know I got one with a problem they have never seen before. It was sent back to ChemUSA once in October, and the monitor was immediately replaced. The only questions asked were the ones the needed to understand what was wrong.
This didn't fix the problem. With no questions, they are replacing the unit. The owner of Discountlaptops kept an eye on the whole procedure.

8/16/04: Shipped - Problem though. On the UPS tracking website it shows that it was shipped via UPS Ground instead of the 2-day air. I emailed Matt right away and he didn't know why it did that but because of the error he refunded my shipping cost plus more to compensate for the error. He was very prompt and I understood that it was just a simple error so I still give DL a great rating in my book. My laptop should be here 8/23/04. If not sooner :oD.
