I hadn't heard of the company before but found very positive reviews here and in other places and then checked out their web-site. It's well organized and not cluttered with lots of other stuff since they focus on selling laptops. I also liked the fact that they provide a good discussion of the merits of the various cpu types that are available. And of course their prices were also extremely competitive: I had looked at alienware machines--which are built by the same manufacturer--before but powernotebooks offered a better deal with the PowerPro brand.

The transaction itself was very smooth. Donald Stratton patiently answered several emails before I was ready to purchase. I then took them up on their cash discount open and paid with paypal. This delayed the deal a bit but I had been advised of that and was willing to wait a few more days for an even better deal. I received my PowerPro on time and it was ready to go out of the box. The machine has very good specs. Most importantly, it is a lot quieter and lighter than other laptops from dell and compaq that I have owned.

I shopped around myself, and could not even locate another vendor that offered the same features (800 mHz bus, for example) in the same machine. "I wanted to buy a new laptop which ran Linux, and was wireless, without the headache of setting it up. I looked at four or six vendors, but none of them quite had the combination I wanted in terms of quality of hardware and price...except powernotebooks.com.

They (in the person of Joel Kleppinger) wrote back almost instantly after I contacted them. I took out a loan to purchase the machine, and had to wait for the money to hit my account ... about two weeks longer than I'd anticipated. They said fine, we'll hold it for you. The computer, of course, is awesome. a 15-inch SXGA+ screen, 1GB RAM, a Northwood 2.66GHz processor, a 60GB hardrive, pre-installed wireless card, and 3 year extended warranty. The Xi Graphics X server runs sweet and sharp, and has lifetime support. Heck, I rendered 60 frames of a simple Blender animation in about a minute or so.

All this, for about $500 to $1000 less than other vendors.

I'd strongly recommend powernotebooks.com to anyone. Don't pay more to get less! These folks are the real deal."
