After a complete debacle with Alienware over the month of February, (which I will not get into at the moment or I might explode with anger), I decided to purchase my new laptop from powernotebooks.com.

I had spent about 4 months conducting research on which laptop I should buy. I originally went for an Alienware Sentia 3200 and then subsequently had to return the system.

I was looking for a small laptop with a screen size no larger than roughly 12 inches with a weight of really no more than 4.5 lbs. I have a nice Toshiba laptop which I am very happy with that I use for my law practice, however it has a large screen and I didn’t want to cart it around anymore. I looked at the Sony TX series but the power was really insufficient for me especially with the high price tag. Other models I looked at were the Fujitsu Lifebook, the Panasonic Toughbook, the Acer Travelmate lines, the Sharp Actius, some of the newer IBM models, and the Toshiba Libretto. I was unable to find something that I really liked out of those models as some didn’t have an internal optical drive, others had insufficient disk space, or too little RAM etc.

The Sentia was my first choice, but after many problems and a return of the machine, I really needed to get on with the process of purchasing a system. I had come across powernotebooks.com earlier in my research but as most people, I was concerned about purchasing a “no name” laptop. I am by no means a CPU expert but I consider myself to be a bit tech savvy. I am very big on honest service and support and expect to get what I pay for without any problems. I ordered my laptop and received it in I think 7 days which was great. Now my review may be a bit premature as I have only had it for a few days, but I am really impressed with the unit and service so far.

The specs listed above were for a really good price as I couldn’t find much else that really came close in a small laptop for this price of roughly $1700.

I dealt with Ron Baird over the phone prior to purchase and he answered all my questions and was very knowledgeable about his trade. He was also friendly and upgraded me to free 2nd day air shipping which was cool of him. I also received prompt email confirmations and as I said above, the CPU arrived way before I expected it.

The laptop surprisingly looked like my Alienware Sentia without the designs. The unit is light, a good small size which I like, and has a really nice widescreen glossy display that looks very sharp. The laptop also has a very sturdy feel to it. I have been running it quite a bit, and have had no excessive heat problems, and the CPU ran just like it should. It also comes with minimal software which is great. I don’t like all the garbage put on mainstream systems in which I have no use for. The only thing I wish it had was a volume dial like my Toshiba but I knew it didn’t have it ahead of time so I wasn’t disappointed. The only other thing is that the volume is kind of low when I play DVD’s but much better with music. The sound however with headphones is good with DVD’s.

The other big selling point for me was the 3 year warranty and lifetime tech support. There is no way I could get this anywhere else without paying hundreds of dollars more. I still have never seen lifetime tech support for any amount. The warranty was placed right in the components box and was in pretty plain language without hidden small print. This company seems to stand by what it sells which is a rarity this day.

So far I am very happy with the CPU, customer service, and the great warranty. If this unit holds up well for me, I will only purchase from this company. I have no problems slamming companies that provide bad service and products. I do it for it a living as an attorney and I do it myself for my own purchases when I get ripped off. On the other hand, when I feel a company is honest, provides a good product and service, I feel it is important to give credit. In my opinion, these companies are few and far between, (I guess I am a bit of a cynic), and this company seems to be one of those few.

I would highly recommend purchasing laptops from these guys. They run a tight ship and seem to care about what their customers think. I like that!
