"My experience has been horrendous so far. The camera I ordered on cybermonday was not shipped. Instead I got a phone call from David telling me I was buying a grey market camera and if I wanted the USA version with a warranty I needed to pay more for the package which included a better battery. I thought we had finally agreed to the package and received an invoice then no camera. Called and spoke with Victor who said he could not get the camera. At this point I am going to cancel my order and request a full reimbursement. Based on other reviews I would say there is something shady going on with this company."
"Update: The manager/owner of Ryther Camera, Thomas called to rectify the situation. He has shipped all missing gear. Also, he has given a store credit. After the runaround, the situation has been cleared. He was concerned about making sure the customer in the end is satisfied and did what he could to make my order complete.
Stay Away from Ryther Camera. They Upsell you on after market generic items, and when you call and try to rectify, they leave you on hold, hang up on you, and give the run around. I purchased a canon 5d, battery grip, extra batteries on a upsell, and they sent me nonsense generic products, and charged me for canon brand, with warranty added to my costs on not even canon products. They are sneaky, and theives. DO NOT USE THEM. They are the absolute worst. Spend the extra hundred and purchase your gear from a reliable source with customer service "
"The price was good but the customer service sucked. I had to call multiple times just trying to get info out of them on my order. Then they supposedly had a problem with the items I ordered and it was delayed for a couple of weeks; they didn't even call to tell me. When I finally received the order, 5 items were missing. Still had my camera and most of the important things but things were missing that was suppose to be there. Took another 2 weeks to get 4 more items after another call to them. Still haven't received the last and final item. Im giving up. I'm not calling them anymore for that last item. "
"Ryther Camera was an excellent online shopping experience. I had a few questions about the purchasing and shipping of the product I got since I was located at a FPO AE address. They didn't ship it to me directly since they didn't offer insurance and didn't want the responsibility of shipping such and expensive item over to an FPO address; can't blame them for that since things do go missing or get broken occasionally before it arrives here. Plus when things do go wrong USPS doesn't want to take responsibility after it leaves the FPO processing center, because then everything is handled by the military. All my questions were answered quickly and accurately by their customer service. Although I was not home to do a follow up review about my experience over the phone when they called asking how I have enjoyed my product my parents said that they seemed extremely nice and concerned about my experience with them and the product over the phone. I decided to make my purchase with Ryther because they offered an competitive price and because they have a well laid out website. Instead of offering a standard starter kit, it would be nice to have other options besides that. The kit is great for beginners, but when you are getting a more expensive camera like myself you likely already have much higher quality products then what they are giving you. Overall experience was good and will do business with again."
"Everything arrived on time and in excellent shape. Exactly what we ordered Everything working fine. I will order again when the need arises."
"AVOID! Yet another bait-and-switch website! I was going to order a Nikon D7000 (body only). They have 2 'body only' options on their site, one of which is refurbished, I went with the new model (again these are the only 2 on their site). I chose PayPal for my checkout option, they did not forward me to PayPal to make the payment.
I waited a day and contacted Ryther Camera, I was transferred to someone who first asked me "would you like the 2 hour or 4 hour battery with that camera" I said "I want the battery that comes with the camera" they said "ok, and how about Warranty, you will really want the warranty" I said "I actually have a question about that, your website says...." (this is where I was interrupted mid-sentence), he said "This model you ordered is the non-US model so it only comes with a limited store warranty, if you want a full warranty you will have to order it". Then he told me that this camera is a "gray market" camera. And then told me I "chose" the gray market camera and that there is a full US version on the website (there is not). I then start laughing some after realizing my experience will be just like the reviews I read for this site (after I had already placed my order). The guy then starts mockingly laughing as well. I then told him "I guess I should have read the reviews before buying from your site, just please cancel my order", and that was the end of it.
Again, AVOID this website at all costs. First, the camera was priced at FULL US price, their lenses are very over-priced, their accessories were over-priced, and on top of that they try to sell you a "gray market" camera and DO NOT label it as such anywhere on their site. This is textbook bait-and-switch.
*UPDATE*
In the 6 days since I cancelled my order I have missed EIGHT calls from RytherCamera. I was a potential customer and feel lucky to have gotten out without transacting any money. There is no further business between me and RytherCamera and calling me over and over isn't making things any better. I am not going to change my review or be pressured into changing it as this is exactly how my experience was with this company. For anyone else who is looking to purchase from them, realize that you are most likely going to be getting a grey market camera. This is not illegal, it just means it is not an authorized US camera, and Nikon or Canon or whatever you get will not service it EVEN IF YOU PURCHASE RYTHER's WARRANTY! Keep that in mind, authorized repair locations WILL NOT do repair work on grey market cameras. And you will NOT be paying less at Ryther. Here are a couple examples
Ryther: Nikon D7000 body only (grey market, very limited warranty) $1,249.00
A** Electronics: NIkon D7000 body only (US version with full US warranty) $1,199
Ryther: Nikon 50mm 1.8g lens (grey market?) original price $309.35 (ha) their price $269
Ado***: Nikon 50mm 1.8g lens (US with full US warranty) $219.95
Ryther: Nikon 35mm 1.8g lens (grey market?) original price $366.85, their price $319
Ado***: Nikon 35mm 1.8g lens (US with full US warranty) $199
Those were just a couple lenses I was looking at. Sometimes authorized sellers will also have grey market lenses. Ado*** does but when they are grey market they are CLEARLY labelled grey market so you know what you are getting in to. And the only advantage of grey market cameras and lenses is they are supposed to be cheaper than the US versions with full warranties not MORE expensive. Just do your research before purchasing anything.
*UPDATE 2*
It seems Ryther just cannot own up to their shady business practices. After reading through the reviews on here someone posted this article (the same one I was about to post)
http://www.pcworld.com/article/107855/camera_confidential.html
And the reason I was going to post it? Because their experience with grey market sellers was pretty much the same experience I had with Ryther. Their website DOES NOT in ANY way clearly state this camera is gray market. In fact the words "grey market" or "gray market" are not ANYWHERE on the product's page. Selling grey market cameras is legal as long as it's CLEARLY advertised as grey market. The ONLY sign that this may be grey market is in the "what's in the box" section of the product's page that states "Limited Store Warranty". That's it. Check the Product Specs, nope, the main page for the product, nope, nowhere does it say grey market. "Nikon D7000 SLR Body Only Nikon D7000|16.2MP DSLR Camera Body Only" That is the exact title for the product as it's shown on their site. And if you search for 'Nikon D7000' on their website, 2 body-only models come up followed by a large selection of camera+lens options. The 2 body-only options: "Nikon D7000 SLR Body Only" and "Nikon D7000 SLR Body Only - Factory Re-Certified". Do you see "grey market" anywhere in those titles?
I was also well aware that everywhere online was sold out of the D7000. I ended up at Ryther as a last resort option after exhausting every other reputable source. I thought "hey, this place actually has it in stock that's great". I poured over the product page to make sure it was legitimate. Didn't see anything that said used or refurbished or anything, and it said "in stock". Sounds great right? Nope, instead I end up on the phone with a rude person from New Jersey who tries to up-sell a bunch of expensive and unnecessary accessories and then sardonically laughs at me when I find out it's a grey market camera. And then after I cancel my order and post about it on this site, they call me ELEVEN times (yes they called more) and sent me multiple e-mails. It seems if you have a bad experience with Ryther and post about it, be prepared to be harassed by Ryther until you change your review. My experience with them has only gone from bad to worse and over a week after I cancelled my order it hasn't seemed to stop. I'm well aware the camera is not in stock at A** Electronics. I chose to go with them because I KNEW what I was getting. Yes I'm going to have to wait a couple weeks to get it, but I am happy to do so for a legitimate US camera. I'm well aware how tough it is to run a small business, I ran one of my own in college. But when you make mistakes or have shady practices there is no one to blame but yourselves.
*UPDATE 3*
Other website names censored due to request from resellerratings"
"I've been shopping for canon 5d mk ll. I finally found a good price in Ryther Camera website. I placed the order with free shipping. James e-mailed me to call him ASAP which I did. Base on my previous experienced, when you call back the seller, they will put their pressure selling tactics on you and I was expecting the same from James. To my surprised, he did offer me something but did not in anyway push me when I declined. The chat ended in less than a minute. I received my Canon 5D Mark ll in the the promised date."
"Excellent experience - most highly recommended. I purchased a Sony Digital Alpha 65 with lens and accessories that were shipped overnight to my home on the west coast. My interactions with Ryther were by phone and through email. Ryther employees were uniformly polite, very responsive and provided outstanding service. This was a difficult order due to limited availability of the camera and some of the accessories, yet Ryther did EXACTLY what they told me they were going to do at every step of the way. At one point when they had difficulty obtaining a Sony stereo microphone, that had been promised to me, from their usual sources they arranged for me to receive one from Amazon, via overnight shipping, and they did not charge me for the extra cost of obtaining the microphone from Amazon. I recommend Ryther without any reservations and will use them again. "
"I bought a Sony a35 camera with kit lens through Ryther Camera. They had the best price by far! About $150 less then Ritz or Best Buy. I'm very happy with my purchase."
"Had a great price and good follow up. "
"Excellent service. Shipped very quickly. Everything just as described. Very good prices. Friendly. Would definitely buy from them again."
"Great service ! Very easy to deal with. Item shipped and I received it very quickly !"
"My original sales experience was OK after I ended the add on sales pressure. My real displeasure is in the fact that it took 5 (five) days from order to shipping! The paypal payment process was completed in two days but Ryther managed to delay shipping for three additional days. I did receive my camera and lens with all contents expected and therefore must give them a B grade."
"I did have problems with my original camera order because of some up selling pressure and wasn't very happy so I cancelled my order. However, I got a call from the owner who apologized profusely and gave me a great deal. He even through in a free memory card.
UPDATE:
I received the camera (I ordered just the body) and have to report that I am not entirely satisfied. The box was a camera/lens combo, with the lens removed."
"I started with a call to Ryther. I was pleasantly impressed when the representative took time to listen to my questions and answered them thoroughly before I hung up. I then went online and ordered a Cannon 60D camera package.
I was impressed again when Tony called me to see if the package was exactly what I wanted. He pointed out a couple of changes that I thought would be beneficial and I decided to make some changes to the package. ( This was not a high pressure sales thing! I hate that!)
Our camera arrived just in time for Christmas. All of the items where professionally packed in their original boxes with all the proper cases. We did end up missing two items, a small tripod and a remote switch.
I called Ryther after Christmas to discuss the missing items. They asked if I liked the camera and I said I love it. The representative quickly looked at the order manifest and noticed the items where listed and said he would send those out to me.
I received an email following the call that the items had been sent.
I was a little leary in the beginning because I had never heard of RytherCamera but I can honestly say after the wonderful customer service and quick reaction to an issue I would recommend them to anyone.
Great Customer Service
On time delivery
Product was just what was promised
Finally, a concern for what my experience was like though this evaluation.
GOOD JOB!"
