"I've been looking at upgrading my 2017 iMac but hesitant shell out the big $'s for the investment. I've tweeked my current system to keep relevant but as the OSX's have advanced my system is sluggish. For the price of an entry level MacMini I think I am caught up. I spent extra for a fast external drive to complement my M4 system as Apple has too high a premium for an onboard upgrade. Regardless, I have faith in Apple to keep innovating and trust Apple won't price their products beyond what I can afford."

"My desk computer for doing bills and household related tasks (2012 Mac Mini i7 quad core, two drive bays, 8Gb memory, running Catalina) failed about one year ago. I was unaware of how hot it was running. I found unplugging a USB device uncomfortable because both the Mini case and the USB plug were very hot. I reset the PMU by unplugging the AC power cord for 15 sec. The Mini still ran hot. Finally the Mini was running slow, slow, slow, and would not shut down without holding the power button for six seconds. Using OWC videos and parts, I was able to repair the Mini
This Mini has software or firmware to install a Fusion Drive across both an SSD and a rotational storage drive. That is pretty cool! The failure involved loss of the Fusion Drive capability; the SSD failed, but the rotational drive did not and I could reformat that drive for reuse.
Two weeks ago the Mini started running slowly and very hot to touch. Ok. Time for a replacement computer before complete failure and loss of the Fusion Drive (SSD and rotational HD).
I’ve always wanted a Mac Pro cylinder (2013-2019). These are at bargain prices on macsales. I think this is because connectivity has evolved from USB and thunderbolt, and the Mac Pro cylinder graphics cards limit OS upgrades past OS 12 . I don’t have any USB/Thunderbolt 2/3/4/5 devices.
I ordered the cylinder (I mean,… really… it is a computer, not a trash can) and it arrived three days later! Migration was straightforward. Very affordable upgrade to a machine I really wanted. A PPC G5 is my server. OWC has kept me going!"
