"The original Sony remote for a 2006 LCD TV had long ago started to wear out (key buttons no longer working). I've gone through 3 of the cheap but adequate RCA universal remotes. So looked to see if I could replace the original. Surprisingly Electronic Adventure advertised the availability of one. Despite some negative reviews of the seller, I thought I'd take a chance since it wasn't all that expensive. Shipping was prompt, transit time just a few days, tracking effective. At first I was disappointed - it was a new Sony remote, all right, but a different (more recent) model. It was accompanied by the preprinted note that others have referred to that the original was no longer available, and this was the most appropriate replacement. And it IS a genuine Sony brand new remote. On close inspection and now use, it has all the same buttons I used on the original, and is more compact to boot. It works fine. So while it is a bit of misrepresentation on the part of the seller to pretend they are selling the 2006 remote when it in fact is no longer available (which frankly I did wonder about at the time), the automatic substitution of a newer one of equal quality and functionality is fine, so the transaction ended as a positive for me, the customer. Additional note: I had to call customer service to ask about a confusing message on their on-line order form; I got a real person quickly who was able to answer the question to my satisfaction."
"Hadn't heard of Vitacost previously, but I will be ordering from them again. Excellent selection of health-conscious personal care items and some foods, at attractive prices. I ordered a variety of items, took advantage of one of their apparently frequent sales. Shipment was prompt and it was well packed when delivered. Web site easy to use. So no complaints, I am sure I will be a repeat customer."
"Before you order from acehardware.com, be absolutely certain you want it and it is the right item. Because I found out the hard way they have a no refund policy. You read that right (and the store showed me the policy in the shipping invoice they got) -- you can get a store credit for future use at the store you return the item to, but no refund. I find that totally unacceptable, and will never order from this web site again. To be fair, this policy is listed on their web site under Returns (you have to read all the fine print, and my fault, I didn't before ordering). I hate "gotchas" when dealing with a business.
As to this order, I needed to replace an uncommon halogen bulb. Ace has a decent selection, but (bless their hearts) has no dimensions on their web site, another bad. So I had to guess by appearance, description, wattage, etc. and made my best guess, took a chance and ordered. They took their good old time about shipment (7 days to the local Ace store, and woke me up at 7:55 am with a call that the order was in; I know their warehouse is just over 2 hours away). I took the burned out bulb with me to the store, and what I'd ordered was obviously the wrong size. That's when the little return drama began (see above). The local Ace Hardware store is excellent about returns (often necessary in home projects, when you're not sure whether a part will work), but obviously I erred in generalizing to the acehardware.com web site. So overall a bad experience, but I've learned where NOT to shop on line in the future."
"Prompt shipping of high quality products. Pleased with what we received (astronomy binocular/tripod combo). It was well packed and arrived in perfect condition. In addition, we are receiving a monthly e-mail from Orion with helpful information on astronomical features in the coming month. Very happy, no complaints."
"I needed Electrolux vacuum parts, eVacuumstore had them much cheaper than Electrolux. Easy ordering, they arrived quickly, properly packed, and were the correct items. In other words, no fuss, no muss, easy shopping."
"Shar Products (aka Shar Music) is a large retailer of supplies for string playing musicians, focused on classical. They used to feature only a large print catalog, but now are also on-line. I have dealt with them for a couple of decades, and in the past generally received fast and good service. So that history contributes to this rating.
However my last order has driven me away. I inadvertently ordered the wrong product, they did not have any protection against order problems or followup to product questions, and while they did refund the purchase price, I am out the postage, even though I really don't think it was really my fault. Rather than summarize, you can decide: here is verbatim most of what I sent to customer service a week ago (minor omissions of irrelevant stuff).
"I was disappointed to see that I am out the cost of the shipping, which was almost as much as the cost of the product that I returned. This makes it unlikely that I will take a chance on ordering another [product] from Shar, considering what happened with this order. Specifically: (a) your brand new print catalog (which I used to place the order) was inaccurate, (b) your initial e-mail response did not tell me what you actually shipped, (c) although your catalog showed 3 sizes available, you stocked only one and shipped it without asking the customer even though it was the least popular size, (d) you were unable to process either my comment filed at the same time as the order or my separate e-mail sent shortly after in a timely manner which would have avoided this error, and (e) although the "small" size [Note: I had asked for the "standard" size"] is shown with a single letter on your web site, it turned out that the order receipt that you e-mailed me did NOT include either the size or product ID number so I didn't immediately detect the error. There just isn't enough protection from customer error (or protection for the customer from your error) in your ordering process at this time. . . "
Customer service did not respond to this e-mail. So I removed myself from their mailing list and will fill my music needs elsewhere.
Moral: if you order from them, make sure you know EXACTLY what you want, and if there is an inconsistency between their catalog (even if brand new) and web site, be sure to ask them before you order. Note that their on-line order form turns out to NOT have a space for customer comments or questions pertinent to the order, and they do not read their e-mail in a timely manner."
"Efficient dealer with excellent selection and good prices. This was the first time I have ordered from them, though I have bought rail videos on line for a decade. Shipping was very prompt, properly packed, and the DVDs were in perfect condition. Some of the videos I ordered turned out to be real bargains, and the free shipping further makes them competitive with just about anyone. I would buy from them again. Recommended.
Update: Same first-rate service in a 2nd order, Sept. 2011. One of the DVDs was defective; they replaced it within days, with a nice and apologetic e-mail (even though it wasn't their fault)."
"Excellent source for DVD cases: no minimum amount, cheap prices, good selection. Fast shipment, properly packed. Incorrectly filled order (one item was omitted) was quickly corrected, they did not charge for reshipment by UPS. When I called, I got a real person immediately. DVD case inserts a good buy, since they increase capacity of case to 2 DVDs at miniscule cost. This was a first-time test purchase, I'll be getting all my DVD cases from them in the future."
"Excellent experience. I ordered on Monday, received it properly packed 2 days later (I live in an adjacent state, they use a courier Spee-Dee Delivery service in 7 adjacent states, and they are indeed fast). Good communication and tracking. They had the lowest price on a specialty decor bulb that is difficult to find, though the flat $8 shipping charge reduces the price advantage. But you can't argue with such good service, especially after a bad experience I just had with a competitor (in a poor decision I bought a cheaper imitation of the same bulb, had to return them as defective and am out the shipping in both directions; that will be in a separate review of the other company). eLight Bulbs is first rate, I will be back."
"Original review, November 2009]
Ordered 10 specialty bulbs that no physical store carries. Light Bulb Emporium had them at an excellent price. However, the flat $7.49 shipping charge brought the price back to just above what I used to pay in stores (when they had them). The flat shipping charge seems pretty typical for lighting stores on the web.
Like other reviewers, I found little communication on shipping progress (though doing so with Priority Mail is hard), but the products arrived, very well packed, 6 days after my order, not jet speed but reasonable. Minor negative: their web site has excellent information, but it is unbelievably slow. Using it is agonizing.
[UPDATE January 2010]
It turned out that the low price was too good to be true - the bulbs' color was not as described (orange instead of amber, there's a difference). And in any case they were defective, the color coating came off in use, and rather quickly. Light Bulb Emporium scores about a B- on the return: they responded promptly, the refund was fairly fast, and they refunded most of my return shipping cost (which I hadn't expected). But doing the math, $7.80 for bulbs + $7.49 shipping + $3.26 return shipping (I had to pay) - $10 refund = $8.55 I am out in the end; i.e., I still lost about half of what I spent on this transaction. Moral: they will stand behind their products to a point."
"They have a lot of unusual non-chemical pest control products that are hard to find anywhere. I needed some rather uniquely-designed glue flycatchers, and this is just about the only place they were in stock and at a reasonable price. I got quick info on stock by phone, the order was shipped Priority Mail the next day; shipping wasn't cheap, but not unreasonable. PayPal is accepted, which is convenient.
Bottom line, placed order on internet Thursday, received Monday morning. Good communication about shipping status, properly and securely packed. They appear to be a responsible merchant, and I will order from them again."
"I needed two high quality cables to set up a new Mac-based media center (Firewire and HDMI). My CableMart had a wide selection and excellent prices, far below big-name stores. They seemed to have more choices in length and build-type than some other on-line cable vendors I checked out. Further, I had asked a question about a related product prior to purchasing, and received a prompt and specific response. So I decided to order from them. Communication was excellent, with separate e-mails for each stage of the shipping process. The two cables were received quickly by Priority Mail, shipping was reasonable, and quality appears to be first rate. Both cables work perfectly (with digital, generally either it works fully or it doesn't, there's no half way).
In short, this company provided exemplary service and as evidenced both from their web site and my one personal inquiry appears to be customer focused. I'll easily start with them for my next cable purchase."
"Ordered a piece of vintage (1928!) sheet music which their web site showed in stock, paid via PayPal. Within hours got a personal response, and a small refund was issued on the already reasonable postage; I didn't request it! Music shipped promptly, received in a few days, very well packed, arrived in excellent condition. You can't ask more than that."
"Bought new Macbook with cable and free iPod Touch (Education Store deal). Paid $18 for 2-3 day shipping; obviously don't use it unless you need it, but I did, and it paid off - the computer got to Wisconsin from China 48 hrs after ordering. Packing outstanding. The iPod has big scratches on back, obviously a return or refurb, and it's the previous model with version 2 of OS on it (version 3 was already out), but hey, it works fine and it's free (you have to pay up front and file for rebate on line, which they make easy to do). The computer itself is just dandy, of course.
[UPDATE 11/09: Thought I'd add this since I've read of past problems with Apple rebates. In my case, everything worked well: form was easy to complete on-line, rebate status was available on-line and there was e-mail notification; I got the rebate check in a few weeks, as expected.]
Two negatives: (1) getting the FedEx authorization to return my dead old Powerbook for free recycling, under Apple's recycling plan. Although I dutifully checked the appropriate box when ordering on-line, the promised e-mail did not come, and it took one web form, 2 e-mails, and 5 phone calls to extract it, arriving 8 days after delivery. They shouldn't have made it that tough (some of the Apple employees I spoke to on the phone knew less about their recycling program than I did). [Update Jan 2010] (2) The Firewire cable they sold me failed after 4 months of very light use (meanwhile a comparable cable I bought from MyCableMart.com for 1/3 the price - $10 vs. $30 - is better built and has worked fine). Apple passed the buck - said I had to go through the manufacturer (Belkin). So they don't stand behind non-Apple products they sell; I recommend buying cables you need elsewhere.
UPDATE 11/24/09 Another good purchase experience with a Mac Mini and peripherals. Shipping prompt (except Magic Mouse, shipped separately by DHL which seems to slow things down), packaging professional, everything worked upon setup and poweron."
"Bought 8 gig SDHC card for Canon Powershot camera. Excellent price for high capacity card from name manufacturer, easy ordering, good communication from Newegg, received card within stated time frame (it came in 5 days). Works fine."
