"Buy.com used to be an incredible e-tailer. Unfortunately, it seems that after New Year's their customer service has become horrendous, they no longer provide free shipping and handling on many products, and it is virtually impossible to cancel an order. Consider my recent experience. I ordered a 512 MB compact flash card from Buy.com on Feb. 26. Given that the item was listed as being in stock and available to ship in 24-48 hrs, I assumed that it would reach me by mid-March, in time for me to submit a $50 mail-in rebate. I started to worry when my item still had not shipped on March 1st (mind you, it was still listed as being in stock and my order had supposedly been "sent to warehouse"). At this point, I attempted to e-mail customer service. After two days and no response, I decided to simply cancel the item. Once again, I received no reply re my cancellation request and my order was still listed as "sent to warehouse." Finally, on March 14th I received an e-mail stating that my order had been shipped the previous day. This begs the obvious question: why wasn't the order cancelled during the intervening week plus between my cancellation request and the ship date. Having been slighted in this manner, I refused delivery of the shipment and have boycotted Buy.com. In an attempt to make an easy buck, they have lost a valuable, and once loyal, customer. Thankfully, there are other sites (i.e. amazon.com for DVDs/electronics and newegg.com for all things computer related) that retain a commitment to excellent customer service (not to mention free shipping/cheap and reasonable prices). "
"Ordered, DVD on 3-8-03, was shipped and I got an email on 3-10-03 and I received it on 3-14-03. Not bad at all for free shipping!! As per other posts I did keep a look out for "handling charges" but never had any added to my order or saw anything about them. The DVD arrived in good condition and was packaged as you would expect for media mail, but it was sufficent for the purpose. DVD is double sided, which is a little unusual but plays very nicely and not a scratch on it. Over all I'm quite happy with my experience with them. "
"Item: PCI parallel port card.
Price: good.
Shipping & packing: good
Return policy: Not good. Card manufacturer agrees that card is defective and will replace with no time limit, but must go through seller. Due to slow responses from manuf. concerning installation problems, defective nature wasn't identified until several days after the 30 day Buy.com return limit; they will not allow return."
"Ordered some speakers from them the other day. First off amazing price, second off I got free shipping and thirdly, they arrived the very next day, free shipping and all. Great experience will defintely do business with them again."
"I purchased a modem router from Buy.com on Feb. 26 2003 and it arrived Feb. 28, 2003. For me I give them a 5 star rating."
"I can't agree with gladlock's comments more. Buy.com's service is the worst I have even seen. I placed an order at their web site on Feb. 26, 2003. And the item's status was instock, and it's said it should be shipped within 24-48 hours. But after a week, the item still has not been shipped. I called ***-***-**** (which is the only number I can find on their web site), and amazed again that they charge $10 for the call if it's about an existing order. See, it's their attitude to existing orders :( However, later, I bypassed it and got to talk with a representative, and was told the item is actually unavailable. It wasted me almost a week before I can try somewhere else. I will NEVER use buy.com again."
"It is clear that buy.com is unwilling to do anything for its customers when there is a problem with an order. Accidentally, my order was sent to the wrong address. This happened because the shipping address defaulted to the last address I used which was a gift to a friend. I caught the error right away and called buy.com to get it fixed. I paid $10 for their toll customer service at the ***-***-**** only to be told that there was nothing they could do by Dick at extension 81572. I asked if the item had left the warehouse yet and he said no. Dick told me to handle it myself with UPS and was kind enough to provide the number. Dissatisfied with this response, I sent an email to customer service explaining the situation, but by the time they got back to me, the items were shipped and they said again there was nothing buy.com could do. Personally, I think there were things they could have done, but they just won’t go out of their way to do them. As a result, I spent a lot of time talking with UPS. In the end, the packages were returned to sender and I canceled the order. I’m still waiting to get my money back. I won’t be using them again."
"Ordered a Startech Slotket (slot 1 to socket 370 converter) and CPU fan. Good prices, reasonable S&H (but not free) and fast shipping. The Slotket as it turned out was incompatible (not their fault), so I decided to return it. The RMA process was very easy, just go to the site, enter the requested information and they assign the RMA #, then mailed it back."
"Please do not credit the person who posted prior to me. He was hard to please. Visiontek DID go broke, they were just bought out by another company. Manufacturer rebates are fulfilled by the MANUFACTURER not the reseller. I ordered 5+ items from buy.com. Ultra fast shipping because they have unlisted warehouses all over the US. Great price too."
"Watch out for their handling charge!!! On Buy.com website they claim to ship free but they charge for handling. Go to this link to check their handling cost: http://www.buy.com/corp/support/shipping/tables.asp?what=much
When I went through their ordering process I was not aware of this handling charge until I finally saw it on their order confirmation email! It cost me $4 extra on a $194 order.
On 1/22/03 I bought one compact flash card and two memory sticks. They were all in-stock according to the website and I did receive them on 1/26/03. That was fast delivery! Another note of caution is to watch out for the rebate dates. On the compact flash card I was given only 10 days from the date of purchase to file my rebate. If this shipment was not delivered as quickly as it did, I could have lost $20 in rebate.
I have purchased 2 books from Buy.com in 1/03. That time they did not charge me handling. That order was delivered quickly too."
"I ordered a very popular in stock PS2 game and an in stock network adapter. I paid *a lot* extra for the game to be shipped 2nd day air. The game arrived as planned but the adapter arrived 7 days later. This proves to me that the adapter was not in stock as shown on the website. Buy.com lied to me to get my business.
Why? Because I could have walked down the block to Circuit City and purchased an adapter off the shelf.
1st and last time I buy from them."
"No problems here... Purchased from these guys even though the cost was not the lowest, the piece of mind is worth it. I will purchase from these guys again!"
"Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful....Have ordered a couple things from Buy.com, but am finally getting around to writing a review.
Placed an order for Sandisk 256mb SD card late evening on the 10th, great price and free shipping. By noon the 11th it was on the Fedex truck with a tracking number in my email, arrived on the morning of the 14th in great packaging (manufacturer sealed package in brown shipping box with lots of styrofoam peanuts).
Even with a snafu on MY end because of my bank's credit card, I was able to fix it with no delay right on the site. This was a good thing, since, yes, phone customer service is a $9 charge. Even though that is kind of annoying, if it means lower prices, I can deal with it, since the website's purchasing and service systems are well designed.
While most of those "bait and switch" NYC shops will show up having a lower price when you do a comparison search, Buy.com has generally been among the cheapest of the reputable companies I've researched. Of course, anytime you order off the net, use some common sense, crosscheck your research, and ask ALL your questions BEFORE you buy. Caveat empor ("buyer beware"), but I think buy.com is a pretty safe bet.
Sidenote- I'm kicking myself for not spending only a few bucks more and buying the 256 SD card with cruzer instead of the card alone. Will write that review if I decide to get it anyways."
"Buy.com is usually the first place I check for items. Selection is okay, but prices beat the usual electronics retailers. Shipping is fast, and order status is excellent. The RMA process is also hassle free."
"Bought a Nokia phone and AT&T plan with Buy.com... phone takes a good three weeks to arrive. I find out on my own 2 days after activiating the phone that the plan I bought from Buy.com does not exist... I call them up to verify, they inform me the details I have are wrong. The plan turns out to be very unattractive. I return the phone.
3 weeks later I get a bill from AT&T. While Buy.com shipped me the phone, activated the phone, and accepted my return, they never cancelled my service with AT&T, nor did they tell me that was my responsibility. AT&T now wants me to pay for the 2 days I used the phone -- I WOULDN'T HAVE USED IT HAD I KNOWN THAT WHAT I WAS BUYING WASN'T WHAT I WAS GETTING. AT&T is stubborn, and Buy.com refuses to acknowledge that it was their gaffe.
To top it all off, while the phone was returned via UPS Blue (2-Day), it took about 3 weeks for them to refund me.
This was my second order with Buy.com and my last one. The first one was a $1,000+ purchase that went smoothly. Alas, they've lost me as a customer ."
